The story A & P by John Updike is quite interesting in some ways but it is also quite disappointing in other terms. The climax of the story is completed in just two words, i.e. I quit and there is no real reason given as to why the hero makes the decision to quit his job. Further, it remains unclear as if the gesture of the hero quitting work because he thought the ladies were not treated right actually got him anywhere with those women or not. The story certainly builds towards a great climax but the end is quite strange and it even seems like the story is somewhat unfinished.

However, there is a lot to admire in the story as well since the descriptions given and the words used by the protagonist are quite apt. The manner in which he examines and describes the girls is exactly what could be expected of a bored teenage store clerk who is only interested in the women who have come in because they are wearing bathing suits. Besides these women, he is surrounded by older women and people he certainly cannot admire as eye candy. The rules given to him by the work place put him in binds which are represented by the bow tie and the apron he has to wear. In essence, other than at the very end of the story, it remains interesting and offers good reading value as an insight into the mind of the hero.
