The idea of celebrity in America is often tied to drugs, sex and behaviors which often transgress the bounds of decency. However, Bill Cosby is one of those celebrities who not only show civic responsibility but also ensure that they give something back to society. It is therefore a matter of pride for members of Omega Psi Phi that he is one of the ranks of the fraternity members and that he has given much more to society than what he has received from it.

The American society itself has shown gratitude for what Mr. Cosby has done for the advancement of the social order. From humble beginnings, he managed to get an education for himself and worked hard through Temple University in Florida. However, his talent for acting and making people laugh took him to a direction where the sitcom genre was defined in the 1970s and 80s through his work. While he could have easily rested on his laurels, he continued to work towards the betterment of his people which was acknowledged by several educational institutes with doctorate degrees from Yale, Carnegie Mellon, Baylor and Haverford amongst many others.

His philanthropic acts have also been highly appreciated by those who received them and the benefits derived from them. The $20 million donation to the Spellman College for their library is only one example of how he is dedicated towards ensuring a high standard of education for Americans. The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom also show how institutes and even the government acknowledge him as an asset for the people living in the United States.

His books, publications, albums and his other works have created a successful business empire for him and that makes him more than an important figure for society. It makes him a role model for individuals who think that the American dream is dead and there is no use in working hard to get what you want. Bill Cosby shows us that humble beginnings are no hindrance to a person who has dedication and is willing to work towards a goal. Not only did Bill Cosby work hard to get rich, he continues to work hard to give something back to his nation and to his people.

Perhaps the most significant thing which Bill Cosby has done is speak the truth when it comes to what is demanded of us today. His frank talks on parenting, working hard and not being concerned with immediate rewards redefines how we look at the American family. While he has given many lessons to the African American families, the lessons given by him are equally valuable for Caucasian or Asian groups simply because they ring of the truth. The values of education, self-discipline and self-respect that are taught by him are all values which we can adhere to and appreciate. It can sincerely be hoped that he continues to do what he has done in the past since he is certainly an asset for all of us.
