Nursing and Substance Abuse Article

Tariman (2007) discusses how substance abuse as well as dependence on some drugs has been noted by the ANA and the AMA as early as 1973. The research has shown that doctors and nurses are at the same level of risk as the general population but their usage patterns differ significantly. The reason for this is simple since medical practitioners often have greater access to substances which can be used to feed an addiction. While doctors may be more likely to engage in the abuse of several substances, nurses were more likely to engage in the abuse of one substance alone. Even amongst nurses, those who work in the ER are three times more likely to use drugs than those who work in other fields of nursing.

The analysis done by Tariman (2007) seems to be somewhat apologetic since it explains how the emotional stress and trauma caused by working with cancer patients amongst oncology nurses may push them towards binge drinking. However, he also notes that it is a serious problem since it can put the public interest at risk. Further, he also describes that the punishments received by nurses can be harsher than the ones which are given to doctors simply because the state boards are often more actively pursuing nurses for substance abuse than they are with doctors. Such discrepancies mean that nurses are at a greater risk for losing their licenses or being placed on probation for their activities.
