Drucker (1966) has given a very authoritative examination of what the effective executive should be like. The first chapter outlines his ideas concerning the effective executive and he begins with the idea that effectiveness can be learned by individuals. In his view, effectiveness comes from getting the right things done. Towards the goal of effectiveness, intelligence, imagination and even knowledge itself becomes little more than resources which have to be used to produce results.

Drucker (1966) then gives us a historic overview of effectiveness and describes the change from manual and individually organized work towards a system where knowledge workers dominate the field. He gives examples from the military and hospitals to show how a shift has taken place with regard to the emphasis on knowledge work rather than manual work or the application of skills. Since effectiveness comes from getting the right things done in a given time frame, it is equally applicable for a person managing a staff of hundreds as well as a person managing a staff of one.

However, there are elements and issues which can push an executive towards being ineffective. These include the issue of the demands on the time of an executive, the demands made by the organization and even the nature of the work done by the executive. While tools can be used to mitigate some of the problems faced by the executive, i.e. computers which can save time over manual report writing, they may themselves become hindrances with issues such as information overload (Drucker, 1966).
